Conceptual Virtual Reality Performance
The Process
Intersect is a VR audiovisual performance examining the consciousness of five disparate humans intertwined through splintering timelines. Separated by time and space, the experience is felt viscerally through the perspective of nanobot insects as they traverse the minds and bodies of the five, overlapping through entangled synapses and into their different sensory apparatus.
Similar to past VR performances of the artist, the piece is controlled entirely from within a VR headset, including both the audio and visual elements of the performance. Through unique software and networking, the artist has created a live-generative tool for depicting this story in real-time in a cinematic performance style of their own, all the while sharing a portal into their behind-the-scenes view of their virtual control center.
Research
The research was driven by aesthetics, in an attempt to fuse the perspective of insects with that of an advanced computing machine. Although much of it was speculative because of the subject matter, the artist studied design patterns from biological animations and medical device interfaces to inform visual design patterns, and biomimicry of insect larvae can be seen in the movements of amorphous matter as a recurring theme throughout.
