The Tarot come to life in an enhanced circus performance
The Italian tradition of the Comedia dell’arte grows strange wings inTarocco: A Soldier’s Tale– a mesmerizing fusion of circus arts, dance, mask-and-puppet theater, original music, elaborate costuming, and lushly animated video.
Tarocco tells the story of an Italian WWI infantryman, trapped behind enemy lines after barely escaping the gas attacks at Caporetto. To pass the time, the soldier comforts a dying comrade with stories using the images from an ancient deck of playing cards known as the “Tarocco Piemontese” (a predecessor of modern Tarot cards). What follows is a spellbinding testament to the power of the human imagination.
Director Nat Allister asked me to contribute animation and projection mapping for the production, with a specific focus on the “star” scene, where three dancers would interact in real-time with visuals. In addition to content creation and live mapping for the scene, I contributed live control of the video screens during performances in the Asheville area for its debut run.
